Top 5 Tips for Making Goals in the New Year, Part 1 of 3

Want to make goals that stick around past January 7th?

You know the routine...

It's January 1st and you say, "This year's gonna be different! I'm going to stick to my goals!"

Then, a week, or a month, or a couple of months roll by and you can't even remember what those goals were or why you made them in the first place.

Life gets in the way. Discouragements (read: reality) come and those goals hit the back burner. Forgotten until next January 1st.

I'd like that to be different for you this year!

If you'll take the time to do a few of these extra suggestions around your goals, you'll notice a difference in how you approach them and the results that you achieve.

ONE: What does success mean to you?

This is an important first step. The world tells us that success is driving a particular car, owning a 4 bedroom house in a beautiful neighborhood, and having 2.5 kids and a dog.

Your parents, your friends, your church, and the media will all have input and strong opinions on what your success should look like.

You may agree with all of that, some of that, or none of that. But, you must decide.

Look up some success quotes, go to GOD in prayer, read your Bible, talk with your spouse. What's your personal definition of success? Write it down and look at it often.

TWO: Cast a 9 Year Vision

9 years???? Why?


Here's the magic about 9 years--it's far enough away that you could imagine life as being different than it is today AND it's close enough that you realize you've got to start working NOW to make some of  those things happen!

It's important to be as specific and clear as possible. Go into detail! Aim for 2-3 paragraphs of information. Where do you want to be in 9 years? What age will you be? How about your children?

Think about the following:

  • health & energy

  • marriage, family, and other relationships

  • faith & spirituality

  • income & net worth

  • career

  • accomplishments

  • gratitude

  • hobbies & free time

Once you have thought about this and recorded it, share it with your spouse, significant other, or close friend. Let them get excited with you and give you encouragement!!
